Hertfordshire weekend plans for 5–6 September 2026
Four solid Hertfordshire plans this weekend: orienteering in St Albans, Pink Floyd in Bishop’s Stortford, a quiet Hitchin walk and a Berkhamsted sportive.

The first weekend of September gives you a proper spread of choices in Hertfordshire: something active but beginner-friendly, an evening out with a big sound and lights, a gentler Sunday walk, and a charity ride for anyone who wants a longer day in the Chilterns. If you’re trying to settle a family plan, a mate’s outing or your own solo reset, these are the four that make the most sense.
HH Saturday Series — Oaklands
HH Saturday Series — Oaklands is at Oaklands College in St Albans on Saturday 5 September 2026, and the club makes it clear that beginners are very welcome. It’s one of their monthly Saturday Series events, with a later 10.30am start to let parkrun finish first. First-timers are greeted in hi-vis, and you can go round alone, as a pair or as a family group.
For a first attempt, the yellow course is the sensible starting point; white suits younger juniors and family groups, while orange is better if you’re already confident with map and compass. The campus gives you a mix of hard surfaces, lawns, open ground and some woodland, so it feels varied without being intimidating. Pre-entry is easiest, and if you’ve gone too easy on yourself there’s a chance to move up a course if maps and time allow.
The Post Floyd Dream Live
The Post Floyd Dream Live is on at Leo Price Theatre, Bishop's Stortford College, on Saturday 5 September 2026. Doors open at 6.30pm, the show starts at 7.30pm, and the venue says there’s a licensed bar and free on-site parking. The band is an Essex-based Pink Floyd tribute, with music drawn from albums including Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall, Meddle and The Division Bell.
This is the one to pick if you want a full evening rather than a quick gig. The pitch here is the sound and the atmosphere: quadraphonic audio, a laser and light show, and a set built for people who know the records well. It should suit Pink Floyd fans, obviously, but also anyone happy to lean into a big production. Tickets are limited, so this is one to sort early rather than leave until the day.
Nature Connection walk
Nature Connection walk meets at the top of Redhill Road near Oughtonhead Nature Reserve in Hitchin on Sunday 6 September 2026. The format is simple: 90 minutes exploring the reserve, with time for silent walking, some time on your own and moments of sharing with the group. It starts at 9.45am, ready to walk down to the reserve at 10am.
This is a good fit if you want a slower Sunday and don’t fancy a structured workout. The walk is framed around noticing the reserve through the seasons and spending time with different people, without pressure to attend every month. If you’re planning to stay, there’s the option of a drink with the group afterwards. It’s the sort of outing where comfortable shoes matter more than kit, and where the pace is the point.
Ride St Francis Sportive
Ride St Francis Sportive starts and finishes at The Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted on Sunday 6 September 2026. Riders can choose from three routes: The Missenden Flyer at 25 miles, The Marlow Expedition at 50 miles, or The Henley Endurance at 75 miles. Entry starts from £40, and the event is open to cyclists of all abilities, with a minimum age of 16.
This is the biggest commitment on the list, but it’s also the most fully supported. The routes are mapped and marked, with rest stops, food, refreshments, toilets and medical help, plus support vehicles and ride rangers along the way. It’s a charity ride, so there’s a fundraising angle as well as the cycling. If you’re weighing up which distance to choose, be honest about your climbing legs: the Chilterns make every route feel harder than the mileage suggests.
Quick shortlist
- HH Saturday Series — Oaklands — Best for a low-pressure first try.
- The Post Floyd Dream Live — Big sound, light show, proper evening out.
- Nature Connection walk — Slow Sunday with a quiet pace.
- Ride St Francis Sportive — Choose your distance and ride for good.
If you’re only picking one, think about the kind of weekend you actually want: active, reflective, musical or endurance-focused. Hertfordshire has all four on the same page this time.
